Counseling
Options
As a professional
counselor, I offer my services to all adults, regardless of their
backgrounds or beliefs. However, for those who have Christian beliefs
and want those beliefs to be part of the counseling, I offer the
option of including these beliefs in the counseling process.
If you decide that you would like to include Christian beliefs in your
counseling, then you need to have a reasonable understanding of what
to expect from me. First, I am definitely not a pastor. Virtually
all of my training in the counseling profession has been secular in
nature. Although I have done some reading on pastoral counseling and
have studied the scriptures, I primarily rely on my secular education,
training, and experience in the counseling process, even if you decide
to include your Christian beliefs in the counseling. It is for this
reason, I describe myself as a counselor who is a Christian, not a
Christian counselor.
Second, I believe that there is great value in taking the scriptures
and finding concrete ways for clients to implement these models on
a day-to-day basis in their lives. The
After the Honeymoon series of
marital workshops is an example of taking the scriptures and applying
them to obtain specific behavioral change in the participants to
enhance the marital relationship.
Third, for those who choose to have Christian beliefs in their
counseling, it would be good to realize that there may be some
discomfort along the way. The Bible has some passages that give us
little or no option but to obey. I may challenge you to meet your
Christian obligations in the process of counseling which can be
uncomfortable.
Finally, whether you are Christian or not, you are not under any
obligation to choose the option of including Christian beliefs in the
counseling. If you choose not to I will structure my plan and
interventions purely on a secular basis. If, at any point, you
would like to switch in either direction that is also at your option. It is really up to you, and
I will respect your decision(s) either way.

After the Honeymoon: Helping
your marriage last a lifetime
After the Honeymoon is a seven-week series of
workshops designed for couples who are already married. Each week a
different scripturally-based topic is presented. The primary
objective of the workshops is to give the participants some of the
fundamental tools that are required to succeed in a marital
relationship. These workshops are available to churches and other
Christian organizations. Call Tim Hofmann at Personal Dynamics at
(480) 813-2650 for details.
